A Year of Stitching for Charity

These are the majority of the projects I completed during 2011.  As you can see, I love to cross stitch and give to charity.  However, there are a few pieces that were given to friends and family and one I even kept for myself.

I have been very fortunate in my life:  I have a wonderful husband and family, I've been blessed with good health, and since I am retired, I can devote more time to giving to others.  This has been a blessing to me and I hope to others as well.

Oak Haven Owls SAL

This is the finished product of the Stitch-A-Long with Oak Haven Designs.  Tonia, the owner, is a very talented designer and very generous with her charts.  I love owls and this was so much fun to stitch.  I made this into wall hanging that I will hang in my craft room tomorrow.  I am proud that I was able to finish it and actually make the wall hanging before the end of this year.

I believe that Tonia is going to be starting another SAL for the coming year, so if you are interested, you can join her Yahoo group and get some beautiful charts.

Simple and Quick Gift Card Holders

I made these cute little gift card holders for my son and daughter-in-law today.  They were so easy and quick.
I had some little buttons that a friend had given me last year that I was able to use to embelish them.

I'm trying to finish up last minute items before the big day on Sunday.  Most everything is done except for some fudge-making, some baking for Christmas Day and there are only a few un-wrapped presents.

You can find the instructions for the card holders here.

Can you believe it?  I've won another fabulous giveaway:  some beautiful hand-dyed fabric by Jackie White.  You can visit her Etsy Shop too.

Since my group makes quilts for seniors and children, I am donating this beautiful fabric to our group and Jackie has agreed to send it to one of our quilters, Bonnie.  Bonnie is going to use it to make a quilt for a lady who has MS and is currently residing in the nursing home we support.  The theme for this quilt will be birds and crosses.  I can't wait to see what Bonnie does with this beautiful fabric.

Love Quilts Square

Another finish for Love Quilts, this one for a boy named Nathan C.

This will most likely be my last Love Quilts square for this year, as I have commitments for other squares for my other group, World of Charity Stitching.  And I need to fill the tote bags for the children at Favor House we are donating during the holidays.

This is a busy time of year for everyone, but we don't want to lose sight of the reason for giving to others.   Stitching for my groups is my way of using my hobby to help others in some small way.

Love Quilts Square for Matthew F.

This Rainbow Trout square was finished last night;  I did a little stitching at the bowling alley, where I stitch between my time to bowl, however, the lighting wasn't the greatest and  the batteries in my little table light I use were failing.

I finished it when I got home and had much better light with my Ott light.

This is a square for a little boy, Matthew F., who lives in Minnesota and loves the outdoors.   I enjoyed stitching it because it was very colorful.  I only had to do a little bit of "frogging", as I made a goof when I looked at one of the symbols and used the wrong color.

Stitching for World of Charity Stitching and Love Quilts is very relaxing for me and I love to be able to give to others who are less fortunate.

Another Therapy Pillow for a Senior at Century Care Center

Today I started and finished another therapy pillow for a senior man at CCC.  It was a stitched piece I did a while back, along with the wolf piece that I had previously made into a pillow.

Since it is a pillowcase, it can be removed and washed if needed.

A Hummingbird for a Special Lady

This piece is for a special quilt for a lady in a nursing home who has Multiple Sclerosis.  She spends most of her time in bed due to her illness.  Our group, World of Charity Stitching, is making a quilt for her comprised of different types of birds and crosses.  This should be a very interesting quilt when our quilter finishes it.

The hummingbird and flower were quickly stitched, but the border took a long, long time.   After I finished the bird/flower, the square looked too small, so I found a border on the internet that I used to enhance the pattern.

A Therapy Pillow

I had stitched a couple of small squares a while back, but didn't really know what to do with them, until I saw a pillowcase that one  of our WOCS members had recently finished.

I had some fabric remnants that dectorators give to people to take home to match their decor, and I used a small piece of that for the pillow and sewed a small band around the end.  For the pillow form, I used some left-over material to make a small form and stuffed it and sewed the end together.

It was fairly easy and it turned out better than I thought it would, since I didn't really have a pattern (just the one in my head-and it gets goofed up sometimes.)   I have a matching bear square already finished that I plan to make into another pillowcase for a senior man at Century Care Center, one of the charities we support.

Look at What a Cute Little Owl I Won

I entered a recent giveaway that Lani was having and was one of the lucky winners.   Lani is the owner of the website called "create".  She sells these cute little owl business card holders at her Etsy Shop.  You can find her shop here.  She also has other items for sale, so please visit Lani at her shop.
Can you believe that she really LOVES owls?  Actually, I love them too and am a collector of owl figurines and photos.  We even had a beautiful little Eastern Screech Owl visit our backyard several years ago.  My husband took several pictures and my mother even had an "owl" mouse pad made for me as a gift from one of the photos.

I'm also working on a Stitch-a-long with the ladies of Tonia's group at OakHaven Designs.  Tonia designs these cute little monthly owls as freebies for her group members.  I am currently working on July's owl (I know, I'm a little bit behind.)  When I am finished, I plan on creating a nice fabric wall hanging, but I still need to find the perfect coordinating fabric.

A Nice Giveaway

Lisa at Hockey Mom Stitchin’ Hobby is having a  very nice giveaway. Click here.

"You Are Beautiful" Tote Bag

A while back I had posted a photo of a square I stitched for World of Charity Stitching group.  I recently made this tote using the square.  It is actually made from one of those fabric swatches you get in the stores to take home to match your decor.  My daughter-in-law had given me a bag-full about two years ago and I finally found something useful to make with it.   I hope it will make a senior lady very happy to receive it.

Clown Face

A new finish for WOCS for our Clown-themed quilt to be given to a child.  This was fun to stitch because of all the bright colors (and not any half or quarter stitches-yeah!).

I am now working on some cute little bookmarks for our "bookmark" drive for the children and senior citizens.

A Fun Square to Stitch

The members of my group, World of Charity  Stitching, are in the process of stitching squares for a man's lap quilt for the Century Care Center, in Century, Florida.    It will be given during the upcoming holiday season to a lucky senior citizen.

I found this freebie on Cyberstitcher's website, and after making a couple of modifications, here is my completed square.  It was fun to stitch.

Breast Cancer Fundraiser

This past Tuesday, the bowling alley had the fundraiser that I made this cute little ornament for.  The lady (Debbie) who won it was thrilled to receive it because her daughter-in-law was  diagnosed with breast cancer a few months ago and had to have a radical mastectomy.  Debbie said she was going to mail it to her and she will love it.

I started this Breast Cancer ornament a couple of days ago to be donated to the bowling alley for the ladies who raise money for breast cancer.  They do this fundraiser every year on the Tuesday night ladies league where I sub occasionally, and I wanted to contibute a little something this time.

I will make it into a flat fold using The Twisted Sister's (Vonna) tutorial and I'll try my hand for the first time in making my own cord.

This chart is a free design by Virginia of Vee and Company; she has a lot of free charts and some beautiful designs for sale too.  Virginia's blog is:   http://veeandcocrossstitchdesigns.blogspot.com/

Hockey Player for Love Quilts

This Love Quilts square for Laura B. was finished last night and will be mailed, along with the Kitty and Snail square, on Monday to the Love Quilts coordinator, Joan.  This piece was actually fairly easy to work on, as it had no 1/2 or 1/4 stitches and not a lot of different colors.

I have started on a small piece for the October Breast Cancer fundraiser we have at the bowling alley and it looks fairly easy.
